Half-Stitch of the Broken Glass

Bullet Points:

* Zanotah has amnesia and can only remember the last __ months.
 +
* After waking up, Zanotah only had the book, the wand, and the rod. The book and wand offered no answers, but he had a memory of the rod.

Backstory:

* Valravar is the name of his dual-bladed scimitar. It literally means ‘Two Scimitars’ in Tolkein’s Elvish but I’m going with ‘Dual Reaver’. I’ll create a list of weapons he’ll summon with similar names, but he’ll probably only start with a limited pool (one big, medium, small damage piercing, slashing, bludgeoning weapon, and one ranged weapon)
 +
* He met some bandits on the road and killed them all before realising one was just a prisoner. He managed to cast Healing Word in time, unaware he could cast any spells.
 +
* The man’s name was Korvo, and he took Zanotah to a nearby town, introducing him to some possible ‘employers’.
 +
* Zanotah has been working there since, taking jobs for the criminal elements or any legit work he can find.
 +
* He knows the image he gives off, and whilst he doesn’t define himself as a demon or monster, he does take advantage of others perception of him.

About a month ago, I woke up beneath a tree. It was a beautiful day, without a cloud in the sky, most likely cos they was all in my head. See, I couldn’t remember a bloody thing. I freaked, alone and forgetting, but when I calmed a little, common sense took over. I saw a nearby river, and chose to follow it up stream, where I found a small village. They helped me get my things sorted, offering me fresh clothes, supplies, and a bit of coin to barter with. I mean, I assume they offered the coin; it was just lying there on the table… I took a road east, and have been passing through towns since.
+
* Zanotah believes in freedom above all things, and despises anyone being held in captivity. He’d rather they be dead.
 +
* Zanotah’s skills indicate he was a bad guy, so he’s scared of ever looking into his missing past. He’d rather be Zanotah now than whoever that guy was.
 +
* Zanotah has realised that the main reason he couldn’t read the book is that he needs reading glasses. It doesn’t affect any other ability than reading.
 +
* Though he’s happy with ale, his favourite drink is whiskey. His preferred meal is meat stew. He’s not picky about what the meat is, as long as it was procured ethically…
 +
* He willingly works as part of a team, but finds it hard to trust people. He will defend his allies, however, unless there’s something particularly irksome about them.

Occasionally I get flashes, dreams of possible memory, but they’re… confusing. I don’t really see anything I understand. I know how to use a sword, a bow, a lockpick, and a yarting. I can apparently speak both elvish and gnomish, as well as a bunch of nonsense words known as Thieves Cant. And when bandits thought to take what I’d rightfully stolen, I realised the book I had on me was filled with magical spells, including the ability to drop fire on my sword. I’ve spent a lot of time working on the book, and I think I’ve worked a few things out. It’s written in an arcane dialect using the Elvish alphabet, but some of it makes fuck all sense when translated. I think it’s in code.

Zanotah is a 7ft tall, pale purple tiefling. His earliest memory is several months ago, when he woke up underneath an ash tree by the river. He was naked, with nothing in his possession but a stick, a rod, and a book. The book was his first thought, hoping it would contain some answers, but his best attempts at reading it came up empty. Some of the words were familiar, but he couldn’t understand their meaning. Frustrated, he looked at the stick, a yew wand which curved at its end into the shape of a raven circling a crystal. Knowing what it was, he realised the book must have been a spellbook, but a second look still turned up no useful information. Attempts to use the wand fell flat.

Between that and the wand with a raven’s head engraved on the end, I do have some remnant of my past, but I’m not really keen to look into it. I mean, anyone with a raven headed wand can’t be the best of fella’s, can they? What if I was an asshole, or something worse? Maybe not knowing who I was is a blessing. Maybe this is the gods way of giving me another chance at life, before I’m too old to enjoy it. I couldn’t give two fucks about the gods, but still… what if who I once was is nothing more than a horror story?
+
Finally, he looked at the rod. It was a piece of metal, with no discernible markings, but as he stared at it, a word formed in his mind: Valravar. He spoke the word, focusing on the rod, and was startled when it grew into a dual-bladed scimitar. “Mercurial”, and it reformed into the rod. He spent a few minutes, thinking of weapons and stating their names, marvelling at the rod transforming into various blades, clubs, and bows. He started focusing harder, adding designs to each blade, ornate guards and metals, and though the weapon was clearly magical, it functioned as any normal weapon. He tried thinking further, considering different tool kits, but the rod seemed focused on weapons.

Yeah… better to move forward, I say. It’s a wide world out there, and I can be whoever the fuck I want to be now.
+
He couldn’t remember the last time he ate, but apparently his stomach could. Hunger overtook him, and he decided to follow the river in search of people. He soon found some, but the bandits made the mistake of considering him an easy mark. Their last mistake, a shock to Zanotah as well as he instinctively tore them apart, only stopping as he plunged his sword through the body of what he thought was the last bandit. The last, shackled bandit. Their prisoner. In a panic, he tried to stem the bleeding, muttering words he didn’t recognise: Focal Leighis. A healing word. The wound began to seal enough to stabilise the man, and Zanotah began tearing the dead’s clothing to form bandages.

When the man came too, Zanotah had rifled through the bodies, discovering money, weapons, and more importantly: rations. Realising the man was awake, the naked tiefling stood tall, his wings stretching wide to form an intimidating pose. The man’s reaction was understandable, and Zanotah immediately felt his own posture shrink. He offered the man some food, using the keys he’d found on the bandits to loosen his cuffs. The man was scared, but accepted the food and kept one eye on Zanotah as he ate. After a few moments of awkwardness, Zanotah apologised for stabbing him. A few more awkard exchanges, and the man introduced himself as Korvo Jordus. Apparently he’d gotten involved with a venture that had gone south, and a gang had put a price on his head. The bandits were planning on cashing in, but Zanotah had saved him! Korvo would help to assemble a rudimentary loincloth to cover Zanotah, and helped him to the next town, introducing him to some friends to start him off. It’s been a while since he last saw Korvo, as Zanotah has been doing jobs for people since, not all of them discerning individuals, but all of them willing to pay.

*Half-Stitch was written as an amnesiac, but one who’s story is actually that he’s a clone/creation that is only a little older than his memories. I’m hoping there’s a lot of potential ideas about his past, but I’ve considered the following possibilities when writing him:
+
Since arriving in town, Zanotah has spent time working on the book, and has discovered that not only is the book written in code, but that his difficulty in reading it is based on his eyes – he needs reading glasses. It doesn’t affect his combat skills – he can still pick out a weak spot in his enemy – but the words get a bit fuzzy unless they’re far away. After procuring reading glasses, he’s started to learn a few of the spells in his book.

*Half-Stitch is a creation designed to be the ultimate assassin. This could lead to more Half-Stitch’s being found, and would explain his stealth, sleight of hand, and weapon-based abilities.

*Half-Stitch was created as a tabaxi for their agility, but with the benefit of gnomish genetics. This could grant them long life, but for now has just given them enhanced intelligence, shorter stature, and for some reason they know gnomish, perhaps as one of their creators would have been a gnome?

*Half-Stitch was a clone created by a powerful mage as a vessel in case of their death. He wasn’t finished (hence his size) when the mage died, but the spell intended to transfer his essence into the clone went wrong. The Mage’s memories now exist in Stitch, but are entirely inaccessible to the young Tabaxi outside of certain abilities.
+
Notes:
*Half-Stitch was the apprentice to a powerful mage, and when the time came he was expected to usurp him. The young tabaxi was too eager however, and tried to replace his master, but failed, barely escaping with his life. The damage and trauma has caused him to repress his memories.

*Half-Stitch was an assassin who was sent on a mission that did not go well. He barely escaped with his life, but his memory was stolen from him (can mean that quite literally if wanted).

*Half-Stitch isn’t interested in his past to start with, but he’ll be curious to anything dangled in front of him.
+
* Ash trees, like the one he woke up under, are traditionally associated with healing. Yew trees, like the wood from his wand, are associated with death.
*“The Broken Glass Clan” isn’t intended to be a real clan (though you can do that if you want to).

*Half-Stitch isn’t afraid of ‘procurement’, since if they wanted to keep it they should either have kept a better eye on it, or they should’ve taken it back.
+
Character Quotes:
*As part of his Inheritor background, Stitch has an arcane book. I’m not planning on using this as my spell-book, as I know the act of writing a spell into the book is part of being a wizard, but I’ve suggested that it’s in code so I don’t know what’s in it.
+
<br />
*The wand is going to be a mystery to me. I’d appreciate being able to upgrade it later on, but unless you’re willing to offer something special then I’d probably just ask for a normal wand for now. It’s going to be hidden on my person to begin with…

*Half-Stitch is going to have the following ideals:

*Pursuit of Happiness – one should be allowed to pursue the path of happiness in their lives, provided it’s not harming anyone. But happiness is a finite resource – not everyone can achieve it…
+
* “To those who see a demon, I am what they fear. To those who see beyond my appearance, I am their friend. To those who would hurt my allies, I am their nightmare.
 +
* “If they believe themselves to be a monster, then that is what they are. Only they have the right to define themselves.”

*Leave the ladder – climbing the rungs to success shouldn’t prevent others from following you, even if you’ve already helped yourself to what’s up the ladder.
+
*
*Oppression is offensive – It takes something really harsh to deserve being locked up, but I will take special offence to any undeserved oppression…
