Backstory

From the Abonoba forest

Looking for cure to blight which has afflicted the forest.

Keph loves big boats & he cannot lie.

Family: Wild-Eyes clan; family members are identified by their name and the place of their birth (X of Y).

The family tree is a huge tree of many-hued leaves that ripple pleasantly regardless of the weather. She has the name of every member of the Wild-Eyes clan carved into her since Great Mother Wild Eyes first took root there, and is now the vibrant heart and soul of the forest. The names appear automatically, once the new family member has been named among her roots. When family members die, a lock of their hair or a tooth is strung from a branch on the tree, and the corpse is offered up to the animals of the forest.

The Wild-Eyes view it as their life’s calling to protect the Abnoba Forest at all costs. Most of the family are born as either druids or rangers, although other flavours happen & are accepted.

At some point during adulthood, should they wish, individuals can leave the forest in search of a mate. Prospective mates are judged predominantly on how well they can help to defend the forest.

Keph of the Slippery Slope; as a child, he was mentored in the ranger arts by his maternal aunts, and showed enough promise that Pangatha named him as her replacement when she retired as Chief Guardian.

To the best of his recollection, Keph had a very happy childhood. Hellfeathers appeared at the moment of Keph’s birth, manifesting at his side as a chick, & they’ve grown together as inseparable friends. While the forest provides most things the clan needs, Keph is usually the one who volunteers to go to the local villages for any supplies they can’t forage, craft or hunt.

The two main villages that tolerate him are Rosemount & Vasserl. He is on the blacklist of many other villages & hamlets in the area, & has received several pre-emptive bans from merchants in the neighbouring regions. Travelling sales people are wary of approaching the forest — not because the Wild Eyes clan are hostile, but because of how strange Keph (& other members of the family) tend to be.

Facts about Keph:

He’s gotten into trouble for selling weed to minors, because he thought they were smaller-stature species.

He’s also gotten into trouble for taking weed off smaller-stature species after assuming they’re minors.

There’s a small part of the forest that’s dedicated to all of Keph’s pets throughout his life. It’s about an acre in size, almost entirely full of frogs & toads, & each of them has their own grave with a headstone bearing their name (Frog 1, Frog 2, Frog 3, Frog 4, Morty 1, Morty 2, Morty 3, Morty 4, etc.).

He once rallied a small army of snails against his parents in a failed bid to extend his bedtime. He attempted this again as an adolescent to get a later curfew.

Mother — Tantha of River Bridge, druid; often patrols the forest as a wolf or pine marten. She’s proud of Keph, but doubts his ability to stop the blight.

Father — Stor of Bear’s Cave, druid; also loves Keph & is proud of him, but considers him to be a below-average ranger.

Maternal aunt (older) — Pangatha of the Forest Floor, ranger; Keph’s mentor, & the only family member that truly believes in him. Her familiar is a stag, named Kozco. He runs the familiars’ weekly poker nights.

Maternal uncle — Gathet of Rotten Moss, the mad cleric; excommunicated himself for reasons no-one could understand, because he explained in Celestial.

Maternal aunt (younger) — Vandetha of Evergreen’s Shade, ranger; lives in the treetops with her blood hawk familiar, Tuusani. She helped to train Keph, particularly regarding strengthening his bond with Hellfeathers & working together as a team. Much as she loves her nephew, she feels a certain sense of impending doom knowing that their fate rests with him.

Paternal uncle (older) — Evanser of Cold Brook, druid; spends most of his time wildshaped as a boar, as he prefers the laid-back lifestyle & casual approach to personal hygiene.

Paternal uncle (younger) — Zakad of Cave’s Shadow, druid; agoraphobic, has never left the forest.

Paternal aunt (older) — Heleta of Petals’ Fall, druid; currently out in the world, searching for her mate.

Paternal enbling (nonbinary aunt/uncle) — Pelas of the Starry Sky, popular travelling bard; often tours the local towns & villages.

Paternal grandmother — Granny Bear, druid (all records of her prior to her wildshaping accident have been destroyed); terrorises the south-east part of the forest.

Paternal grandfather — Veston of Broken Rock, ranger; eaten to death several decades ago by Granny Bear.

Maternal grandmother — Telantha of Forest’s Edge, druid; enjoys taking the form of a friendly cat or dog & being looked after by people in the nearby villages.

Maternal grandfather — Leaf Harvey Mosswald of the Grassy Knoll, ranger (not allowed to ask questions about why he disappeared suddenly around the time of a monarch’s death).
