Session: The Watcher in the Rain

Start Point: The party is already hidden around Elara Thornwell’s home in the Weaver’s Quarter.

Estimated Length: 4–5 hours

Primary Goals:

  • Identify the Watcher
  • Follow the trail to Warehouse 17
  • Uncover the cult’s purpose
  • Fight the cult cell
  • Discover the hidden passage beneath Danu

ACT 4 – The Ambush

Read Aloud

Rain falls steadily across the Weaver’s Quarter.

Water runs from tiled roofs and gathers in narrow channels beside the cobbles. Most homes have gone dark. Only a few lanterns still burn behind shuttered windows.

Elara’s house sits silent.

The ranger’s avian companion remains perched on a nearby rooftop, feathers slick with rain, head turning in short, precise movements.

Time stretches.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Then the bird freezes.

Across the street, on the roof of a dye-maker’s workshop, a figure stands motionless against the rain.

Dark cloak.

Porcelain mask.

No weapon visible.

No movement.

It is simply watching the upstairs window where Rowan once slept.

And somehow, despite the darkness and the rain, you have the terrible feeling that it knows exactly where each of you is hiding.

What the Watcher Is Doing

The Watcher is not here to fight. It is confirming whether Elara has spoken to anyone and whether the party has become involved.

If the party remains hidden, the Watcher watches for roughly one minute before departing.

If the party moves, speaks, or attacks, it immediately attempts to escape across the rooftops.

Rooftop Pursuit

Run this as a skill challenge.

Goal: Keep the Watcher in sight and determine its destination.

Requirement: 6 successes before 3 failures.

Suggested Skills:

Skill Example
Athletics Leap between rooftops
Acrobatics Keep footing on wet tiles
Perception Spot the figure through rain and fog
Investigation Predict its route through alleys
Survival Read disturbed water and footprints
Animal Handling Direct the bird to maintain visual contact

Read Aloud During the Chase

The masked figure moves with unsettling grace.

It never looks back.

It simply knows where the next roof will be.

Rain lashes your face as you scramble across chimneys, laundry lines, and collapsing gutters.

The bird circles overhead, crying sharply whenever the figure disappears beneath an overhang or slips through a narrow lane.

For a moment you lose it entirely.

Then the bird wheels eastward.

The Watcher is heading toward the river.

Outcome

Success: The party follows the Watcher all the way to the warehouse district and sees it enter Warehouse 17.

Failure: The party loses sight of the Watcher near the river but still locates Warehouse 17 from the bird’s final observation. The cult has had additional time to prepare.

ACT 5 – Warehouse 17

Approach

The river district feels abandoned.

Fog drifts between rows of decaying warehouses.

Many stand empty, their doors hanging crooked on rusted hinges.

Warehouse 17 is different.

Its windows are boarded.

Its locks are new.

And despite the rain, fresh mud marks the threshold.

The bird lands on a roof beam above the entrance and gives a low, warning call.

Inside the Warehouse

The interior smells of damp timber and river water.

Stacks of old crates create narrow corridors through the darkness.

A lantern burns low near the far wall.

Someone has been living here.

Not for years.

For days.

Investigation

Allow the party time to explore.

They find:

  • Children’s blankets laid out in rows.
  • Half-eaten meals.
  • Water barrels filled recently.
  • Wooden toys carved by different hands.
  • Small shoes left beside sleeping pallets.
  • Charcoal drawings pinned to crates.

The Drawings

Read Aloud

Every drawing shows the same impossible scene.

A city beneath a sky with no stars.

Creatures pouring through the streets.

Towers burning.

People running.

And above it all—

A vast shadow that dwarfs the city itself.

No two drawings depict the creatures the same way.

Yet every child has drawn the same giant.

Checks

  • Investigation DC 13: The children were drawing from memory, not copying one another.
  • Insight DC 13: The drawings are frighteningly sincere.
  • Religion DC 15: The giant does not match any known deity, fiend, or titan.

The Hidden Trapdoor

A successful search reveals a trapdoor concealed beneath stacked crates.

Read Aloud

When the crates are moved aside, a square iron ring becomes visible in the floorboards.

The wood beneath it is cleaner than the surrounding planks.

Used recently.

Frequently.

Cold air rises from the darkness below, carrying the smell of wet earth and extinguished candles.

ACT 6 – The Archive Below

Read Aloud

The cellar is far larger than the warehouse above should allow.

Stone walls disappear into shadow.

Shelves of ledgers and journals line the room.

Pale blue candles burn without flickering.

The air is thick with damp earth.

Maps cover one wall.

Names cover another.

Dozens of children.

Some circled.

Some crossed out.

One name stands out immediately.

Rowan Thornwell.

Beside it, written in careful black ink:

“Confirmed Dreamer.”

Journal Fragments

Players can quickly skim several journals:

“The dreaming children are easiest to find.”

“The visions are increasing.”

“The Sleepless Host gathers.”

“The Veiled One stirs.”

“Prepare the vessels.”

“Adults forget. Children remember.”

ACT 7 – Cultist Ambush

Trigger

As the party investigates, footsteps sound above.

Then the trapdoor slams shut.

Voices whisper in unison.

Read Aloud

The blue candle flames stretch sideways.

Shadows crawl across the walls.

A calm voice speaks from the darkness.

“You have seen too much.”

Figures emerge between the shelves.

Four cultists in dark, rain-soaked robes.

And behind them—

A woman carrying a ritual dagger, her eyes reflecting the candlelight like polished glass.

The Dream Speaker.

Combat Encounter

Enemies:

  • 4 × Dream-Touched Cultists
  • 1 × Dream Speaker
  • 1 × Nightmare Manifestation (summoned during combat)

Battlefield Features

  • Bookshelves: Half cover.
  • Blue Candles: Difficult terrain in a 5-foot radius as shadows thicken around them.
  • Ritual Circle: A creature standing within it has advantage on Wisdom saves against fear.
  • Collapsed Shelves: DC 12 Athletics to push over, creating a 10-foot line of difficult terrain.

Round-by-Round Guidance

Round 1

Two cultists engage in melee while two use crossbows from behind shelves.

The Dream Speaker opens with Hold Person or Blindness/Deafness.

Dialogue:

“The children have seen the future.”

“You cannot stop what is coming.”

Round 2

The Dream Speaker raises the ritual dagger.

Read Aloud

The blue flames gutter inward.

Darkness gathers above the ritual circle like liquid smoke.

Something unfolds from it.

Too many limbs.

Too many eyes.

A shape that refuses to remain the same for more than a heartbeat.

The Nightmare Manifestation enters the battlefield.

Round 3+

The Dream Speaker fights while attempting to reach the hidden passage at the rear of the cellar if reduced below one-third hit points.

Additional Dialogue:

“The Sleepless Host already walks.”

“The Veiled One knows their names.”

“You cannot wake those who were chosen.”

Aftermath

If the Dream Speaker is captured, they reveal:

  • The missing children are alive.
  • They are being gathered beneath Danu.
  • The warehouse was only a screening site.
  • “Dreamers” are children who receive visions of the coming invasion.
  • A greater ritual is already underway below the city.

ACT 8 – The Hidden Passage

Read Aloud

Behind a sliding stone panel lies a stair descending into darkness.

The air grows colder with every step.

Roots thicker than tree trunks pierce the walls.

Ancient carvings emerge from the stone—symbols of Dannan, deliberately chiselled away.

Not weathered.

Erased.

As though someone wished the earth itself to forget.

Final Discovery

Several hundred feet below, the party finds evidence of recent passage:

  • Small footprints.
  • Children’s blankets.
  • Half-eaten food.
  • A wooden toy sword.

Read Aloud

The toy is carved from cheap pine.

Its hilt bears two scratched initials.

R.T.

Rowan Thornwell was here.

And not long ago.

Cliffhanger Ending

Read Aloud

The tunnel opens into a cavern so vast your lantern light cannot find its ceiling.

At its centre stands an immense stone structure wrapped in roots thicker than houses.

Green light pulses from within.

Like a heartbeat.

Then a child’s scream echoes across the cavern.

Alive.

Terrified.

Close.

And before the echo dies away, another voice whispers from the darkness:

“The people from my dreams...”

Then Rowan’s voice, small and shaking:

“Please...”

“Don’t let it wake up.”

End Session.

Session Notes

Estimated timing:

Act Time
Ambush & Chase 30 min
Warehouse Investigation 45 min
Archive Exploration 30 min
Combat Encounter 60–75 min
Descent & Cliffhanger 20 min

Total: ~3.5–4.5 hours depending on roleplay and tactics.

This version preserves the original combat exactly as written while giving every investigative and atmospheric beat enough room to breathe, making the cult feel organised, intelligent, and genuinely frightening before the party descends into the nightmare beneath Danu.
